    Descriptive info: Laois Civil Defence operates as the reserve emergency service for County Laois.. It exists to provide assistance to the community and to assist other emergency services where necessary.. It also cooperates with the Radiological Protection Institute within the framework of the national emergency plan for dealing with radiological emergencies.. During wartime it is responsible for measures dealing with protection of the civilian population.. It's a voluntary part-time service; members up to the rank of the Civil Defence Officer are unpaid.. Civil Defence operates both under central (Department of Defence) and local (Local County Council) control.. Funding is split 70:30 respectively..  ...   are indicated on the map..     Descriptive info: Laois Civil Defence, Durrow Unit have set up the first dedicated (Human Remains Detection) HRD K9 Unit, in the history of Irish Civil Defence.. Civil Defence Board approval for the setting up of this unit was announced at the Civil Defence National Competitions hosted by Laois in May this 2005.. The Unit is up and running since June 2006.. Our dog "Rex" was trained in Holland.. The Laois Civil Defence K9 unit will be honoured to have the second HRD dog in the country; the other dog is with the Dublin Garda K9 unit.. HRD dogs are trained to detect Human Remains.. The Gardai may request the use of such a dog if they are looking for a missing person or suspect that the person has died as a result of a crime and may fear that a body has been disposed of in an unknown location.. The dogs are trained to alert on the scent of decomposing human material, i.. e.. blood, hair, tissue, bones, teeth and /or bodily fluids.. Some of these scents can hang around for a long time depending on the environment and weather.. The dogs are trained in such a way that they do not interfere with a possible crime scene; the trained alert (behavior the dog shows when he finds  ...   keep searching without being distracted.. The new replacement K9 was trained with great success.. Finding the right personality traits in a SAR K9 can sometimes be a bit tricky.. Laois County Council has kindly donated some funding for our SAR K9.. Rex, our HRD K9 resting.. Rex, given playtime as reward.. Rex Searching.. Unit Logo.. Dutch training school for detection K9's.. Our Civil Defence K9 Team will be under the command of the Civil Defence Officer for County Laois.. Mr.. L.. Preston.. All requests by statutory first line services will be coordinated and processed by the CDO, subsequently the K9 team may be deployed to provide its service to the police.. Protocols will be put in place re management of the search and re responsibility of the search, our role within the SAR framework will be outlined.. When the unit becomes operational details will be published like contact phone numbers, email addresses etc.. Our unit is not first line, it's secondary to Garda requests for assistance..     Descriptive info: The Auxiliary Fire Service has the role of supporting the local authority fire service.. It plays no part in day to day firefighting, but is available to assist the regular fire service at large protracted incidents.. Laois Civil Defence operates a Bedford Class B Water Tender (WrT) fire appliance, which was acquired in 2003 and put into service in early 2004.. A hose laying trailer is also in use which can be towed behind a 4wd.. Roles Laois AFS put emphasis on include water relaying and rural firefighting..

Some of these as stewarding are seen frequently, while others, such as radiation dosimetry will hopefully never have to be provided.. Although the Civil Defence organisation is composed of sperate Services ( A..  ...   in Laois the distinctions are more blurred.. Each volunteer receives basic training in all areas, and then individuals specialise in one or more Services(s).. In this way all personnel can contribute in different emergencies..     Descriptive info: The Durrow base is located near the town square, on the Cork road.. The building was formerly the town Fire Station.. In 2001 the building was re-roofed and an internal refurbishment took place.. In 2002 the new yellow paint scheme was applied, currently a structure to house the  ...   building there is a yard which is used for training.. The unit has a current membership of around 35, with three officers, 3 leaders and 29 volunteers.. Rescue, AFS, Casualty and Warden training takes place at No.. 3 Base.. The unit has a catchment area throughout South County Laois..
